The Menus

The use of fresh and locally sourced produce including fruits, herbs and vegetables from our own gardens is at the core of our food philosophy.

The team of dedicated chefs produce tasty and individual dishes that reflect the best of modern British and Continental cuisine. Awards include 2 AA rosettes, Taste Durham Local Champion, Taste Durham Highest Quality Assured and an Enjoy England Breakfast Award.

Dinner Menu

Our menu changes every few weeks and we try to keep the website as up-to-date as possible, however, there may be variations. For an exact copy of our current menu please contact the hotel. We also offer a daily changing 'Chef's Choice' menu with two or three dishes per course.

Starters

Pre-starter of chef's homemade soup - complimentary

Chicken liver parfait with homemade plum jelly, orange and watercress salad, toasted walnuts and toast - £8.50

Smoked Scottish salmon with rillettes of peppered mackerel, brown crab mayonnaise, apple and rocket - £9.00

Goat's cheese parfait with red wine poached pear, toasted nuts and seeds, ginger bread and red wine syrup - £8.50

Warm tartlet of leek, bacon and spinach with a poached egg and pommery mustard - £8.50

Main Courses

Roast tenderloin pork with slow cooked belly, Cumberland sausage, fondant potato, roasted parsnip and a sage infused jus - £19.00

Pan roasted loin of Simpson's Hardwick mutton, braised shoulder, mutton and rosemary sausage, savoy cabbage, mashed potato and a mint jus - £20.00

Seared fillet of seabass with butternut squash puree, beetroot and potato dauphinoise, spinach, beer batter prawns and a dill cream - £19.50

Aubergine filled with caramelised onion and topped with flat cap mushrooms and a Durham camembert cheese, fat chips, spinach, cherry tomatoes and a peppercorn sauce - £16.50

Roast breast of chicken wrapped in Parma ham with truffle oil mash, mini chicken and ham pie, wild mushrooms, smoked bacon, broad beans and a thyme jus - £19.00

NB. A cut of Simpson's beef always features in a dish on our 'Chef's Choice' menu!

Sample Lunch Menu

This is the sample lunch menu for Monday - Saturday when lunch is served from 12pm until 2pm. Booking recommended but not always essential.

Monday to Friday: 2 courses £15.00, 3 courses £19.50, Tea/coffee £2.00

Saturdays: £23.50 for three courses

Warm salad of slow cooked pork belly, black pudding, Northumberland smoked cheese and bacon with rocket and cider treacle

Pressed terrine of confit chicken and foie gras wrapped in Parma ham with pickled vegetables, apple puree and toasted brioche

Prawn and smoked fish platter with crab and potato salad, pickled cucumber and watercress

Tartlet of goats cheese, sunblushed tomato and rocket with herb oil and balsamic reduction

Our traditional Sunday lunch is served from 12pm until 2pm, booking essential.

Roast sirloin of Simpson's beef with Yorkshire pudding, horseradish sauce and a roast gravy

Grilled Scottish salmon with crushed new potatoes and a lemon hollandaise
