A Green Business Approach

When you see the impact of the modern world on our eco systems and wildlife it brings home the importance of taking action to make a positive change for the future.

For a number of years we have been reducing our energy consumption by taking measures such as fitting LED lighting (typically using 80% less electric for the same light), installing high efficiency heating systems and improving insullation in buildings to reduce heat loss. We still have a lot more to do and although some energy reducing measures are financially beneficial, others require a significant investment and for businesses that are saddled with ever increasing operational costs it is a challenge to say the least.

Plastics has been a big headline over the last couple of years and rightly so. The pollution of our oceans is catastrophic and the fact that plastics have only really been widely used for the last 70 years coupled with the rapid population growth on our planet shows us how bad a situation this really is. We have been recycling our waste for a few years now separating our food, plastics and papers prior to collection. The problem as we all know is that despite our best efforts a lot of plastic is not recycled at all due to a lack of facilities to handle the process. The answer therefore has to be a significant reduction if not a complete stop on using them in the first place.

Single use plastic is something that we have reduced greatly in our business. Examples include milk being delivered in returnable bottles (as they once were!), bathroom toiletries being dispensed from refillable containers, plastic pens in bedrooms being replaced with wooden pencils, plastic straws and cups being replaced with paper/vegware products that are compostable and even Christmas crackers that contain plastic tatt being replaced with eco-friendly alternatives. We still have more to do and we are looking at the suppliers we use and their approach.

With a growth in electric cars we have recently installed a car charger point that is offered on a complimentary basis to guests staying overnight. Our next company vehicle will be an electric model when due for replacement.
