Lights, Camera....Action!
Film and TV Locations in the UK

Headlam Hall is located in the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, one of the Durham dales. It is also on the doorstep of the North Yorkshire dales and National Park. This scenic rural area with its rich heritage has been used in the filming of many TV shows and movies over the recent years. Some you may know about, others may be a surprise…

One of the UK’s favourite Sunday night TV dramas must be Downton Abbey and in the 2019 'Downton Movie' they filmed on location at Beamish Museum taking advantage of its period town and in particular the early 20th century car garage.

The 2020 award winning film, 1917,  was about World War 1 in rural France, however, scenes were filmed at Low Force Waterfall in Teesdale! A number of the cast, including the lead actor, George Mackay, stayed at Headlam Hall during the filming. The Netflix series, The Witcher, also filmed at Low Force so for any movie fan it is well worth a visit.

Durham Cathedral is well known as having been used in the blockbuster films about Harry Potter but it was also used in 2019 for the Marvel film, Avengers Endgame.

Raby Castle is one of England’s finest medieval castles and is located just 4 miles away from Headlam. It has been used for the filming of movies and TV shows including the 1998 film Elizabeth and the 2016 series Victoria.

Finally, one of the hot films of 2025 that is due for release this summer is 28 years later which was primarily filmed at rural locations across the north of England including the village of Melsonby which is just a few miles from Headlam.
