More and more guests are discovering the magic of an Autumn or Winter break at Headlam Hall Hotel. Once considered the "off-season", the months from November through March are now some of the most rewarding times to visit. Our cosy countryside retreat makes the perfect base—and with so many things to do in County Durham, there’s never been a better time to explore.
Barnard Castle & The Bowes Museum
A visit to the vibrant market town of Barnard Castle is a must. While it gained unexpected fame during the pandemic, it remains well-loved for its independent shops, antiques, and arts and crafts scene.
Just outside the town lies the impressive Bowes Museum - a striking 19th-century French-style chateau built by John and Josephine Bowes. It houses a world-class collection of fine and decorative arts, including the Silver Swan automaton, which recently celebrated its 250th anniversary.
Raby Castle & Deer Park
Nearby, the historic Raby Castle, home to Lord Barnard, stands as one of England’s finest medieval castles. Wander its stunning parkland and spot the resident deer herd, then explore the newly renovated retail spaces and café. Raby is open throughout the colder months, offering a unique seasonal charm.
Locomotion, Shildon – A Railway Heritage Gem
For a fascinating and family-friendly day out, visit Locomotion in Shildon, located just outside Bishop Auckland. As part of the Science Museum Group, this museum is free to enter and showcases highlights from the national collection of historic railway vehicles.
Located in the world’s first railway town, Locomotion celebrates County Durham’s proud railway heritage with interactive exhibits and seasonal events. It’s certainly not just for train enthusiasts!
Bishop Auckland: Castles, Art & Faith
Bishop Auckland continues its cultural revival with several new and world-class attractions:
- Auckland Castle has undergone significant restoration, making it a stunning site to explore.
- The recently opened Spanish Gallery houses the UK’s first permanent collection of Spanish art outside London.
- Opened in October, the brand-new Faith Museum occupies a 14th-century wing of Auckland Castle and explores 6,000 years of faith in Britain through immersive displays and changing exhibitions.
High Force, Low Force & Dark Skies
The Durham Dales are famed for their unspoiled natural beauty—and in Winter, they take on a peaceful, almost mystical quality.
Enjoy riverside walks and spectacular views at High Force and Low Force waterfalls. These dramatic falls are mighty after rainfall, and with easy and moderate walking routes from the car park, it’s an ideal outdoor adventure on a crisp winter’s day.
The area is also a designated Dark Sky zone, offering excellent opportunities for stargazing during clear winter nights.
