Spa at Home

Top 5 tips for the perfect at-home spa day

If you’re dreaming of the relaxation of a spa in the comfort of your own home, then stop dreaming, and start believing. It’s genuinely possible to replicate the benefits of a spa without necessarily having to turn to the professionals. Ideal for weeknights after a busy day at work, creating an at-home spa isn’t a difficult task - you can easily make a spa out of everyday items that you’ll likely already have around your home. If not, an array of affordable beauty items are always available at pharmacies/supermarkets.

1. Exfoliation – Exfoliation is the first step to restoring your skin, as it allows for other nutrient dense oils and moisturisers to easily seep in. And what’s more, your skin will feel super smooth! A bristle brush is the perfect tool, since they can be re-used time and time again. They are perfect for use prior to stepping into the shower, since the bristles help to bring dead skin cells to the surface before being washed away. The bristle brush also helps to remove toxins and improve circulation.

2. Body oil – It’s a good idea to apply body oil straight after showering, since your pores will still be open. This way, the deeper layers of your skin will be nourished and moisturised. Since they are high in both antioxidants and fatty acids, oils provide a more intense nourishment, helping to maintain young-looking skin. Coconut oil, in particular, is high in antibacterial and antifungal properties, helping to protect the body – particularly in the colder months. Oils also contain more natural ingredients, providing your skin with the essential vitamins and minerals it needs. After applying an oil, your skin will feel luxuriously smooth and supple.

3. Aromatherapy – Aromatherapy, created by the diffusion of essential oils, helps to relax and de-stress the body. Whether you scatter a few drops in your bath or a diffuser, you’ll soon feel the health benefits -  different oils have their own unique effects on the body. Peppermint and eucalyptus oils, for example, help to boost the body’s immunity; whilst lavender oil is known to fight anxiety and improve sleep quality. At Headlam Hall spa, we use oils for aromatherapy to help promote a deeper relaxation and health benefits.

4. Double Cleansing – For a full detox of the facial skin, double cleansing is a must. The double cleanse helps to ensure that all impurities that are attracted to the skin are brought to the surface and washed away. This usually begins with a cleansing oil or micellar water with cotton pads to wipe away any dirt that’s on the surface of the skin. This is then followed by a water-based cleanser – such as a foam or a cream cleanser, which should be massaged into the skin before being washed away with warm water. This ensures for a deep cleanse – but don’t forget to splash your face with cold water at the end to close those pores!

5. Massage – What would a spa day be without a massage? Step it up a notch with a self-massage. Working from the neck upwards, massage your skin in circular motions – using an oil to do this works best. This helps to improve circulation, ultimately producing more collagen, thus improving elasticity of the skin. You can also give yourself a relaxing foot massage – and even add in a pedicure!

There are endless ways that you can recreate a spa day at home. However, sometimes you just can’t beat a professional massage by a therapist, or putting your feet up in a warming sauna. At Headlam Hall, our therapists are dedicated to giving our guests an unforgettable spa experience. For more information about our spa, click here.
