Spring into Summer

As the evenings start to get lighter and the flowers begin to bloom the outdoor aspect of Headlam Hall really comes alive. Our walled gardens are over four acres in size and are a great place to explore, perfect for that pre-dinner stroll or even post dinner in high summer. As well as immaculate lawns you will find an ornamental canal, kitchen garden, rose garden, tennis court and a few hidden features as well! Our gardeners do a great job keeping everything looking neat and tidy and the horticultural oriented folk will enjoy investigating the large herbacious borders.

Beyond the gardens lies our attractive 9 hole golf course. This picturesque course was once ancient grazing land with 'rig and fur', streams, ponds, woods and an abundance of wildlife. The feature 7th 'pond hole' is home to a variety of wild fowl and we even have a pair of swans at certain times of the year. The course is not only attractive but also a real challenge for golfers and is kept in fabulous condition by our two greenkeepers, Ben and Olly. Additional bunkers have recently been added as they continually aim to evolve the course for its players. The resident PGA accredited professional, Stephen Carpenter, is on hand for lessons with the 10 bay covered driving range providing an excellent practice and tuition facilitiy. Stephen has been the course pro since it opened in 2004 so has great knowledge of all things golf at Headlam. He is also a Durham County Junior coach so for families staying at Headlam this summer it provides a great opportunity for children to learn a new sport and have great fun at the same time.

One of the best things to do at Headlam Hall on a mild spring or summers evening is to sit on the terrace overlooking the gardens as the sun sets for the day. Perhaps a cup of tea or a glass of wine in hand, the sound of the birds settling down for the night, the aroma of freshly cut grass and that delightful tranquility of the English country garden....
