What to see & do in Durham

As we set foot into the summer months, the kids begin to break up from school and parents everywhere find themselves panicking as to how to keep them entertained for a whole six weeks. Well, worry not, Durham has a variety of things to see and do over the next few months, that are sure to keep the whole family entertained and wanting more!

At the heart of the city stand Durham Castle and Cathedral. Both recognised as World Heritage Sites, these two historic buildings overlook the medieval city below, acting as focal points for the intriguing history of Durham. Around them winds the meandering river; providing a perfect backdrop, while also proving the ideal setting for a sunrise/sunset wander. What could be better than history and nature combining for an idyllic day out?

If you’re looking to delve a little deeper into the city’s historic culture, then heritage and history combine at The Beamish Museum, which demonstrates just what life in the North East of England was like for residents in the 1820’s, 1900’s and 1940’s.

The museum brings historic moments in time alive with its interactive experience, allowing visitors to freely walk in and out of the replica houses, farms and even ride on the old trams. So, why not get transported back in time this summer and see what Beamish has to offer you and the kids?

Although there’s plenty to do in the heart of the city, the outstanding beauty of the North Pennines lies just a short drive away. Incorporating much of the Durham dales, this vast landscape has plenty to offer and is the ideal place in which to appreciate the English countryside.

Nestled within the Pennines lies the Bowlees Visitor Centre, where you can find out about the area’s history, the best walking routes and where to explore for wildlife. With an abundance of natural sights and a variety of different routes to be discovered, the North Pennines are definitely one to tick off the list. Why not bring man’s best friend along to explore with you? Dogs are always welcomed by us!

When the adventures are over and the fun winds down, bed begins to call (especially after a day with the kids). So how about ending your adventures with us? Our luxury beds are hard to resist, especially after a long day’s sightseeing, and with everything else we have to offer, Headlam Hall is a fantastic option - even if we do say so ourselves.

Check out what offers we have on over the summer months and how we can make your trip to Durham even more exciting.
